8:00
AM – 10:00 AM
The first two hours of the day were filled with check in, costume contest,
game
briefing and rules. Just before the start of the game Don the event coordinator
wearing
a white ref robe explained that there would be four team’s two Dark
side teams and
two Light side teams. Minas Morgal and Mordor made up the Dark side. Gondor
and
Ithillian made up the light side. Don announced that there would be a
different mission
every hour and went over all the rules of the game. Then everyone headed
onto the
field to their bases to await the starting horn.
10:00
AM – 11:00 AM MISSION 1
The mission consisted of the Dark side needing to take and hold the Black
Gate in the
middle of the field. When the horn sounded the Ithillian Rangers made
a quick break
for the Black Gate that was located in the middle of the field. They made
it to the gate
first but Mordor and Minas Morgal were there so quickly the Ithillian’s
never had a
chance to set up an organized defense. Gondor came to the Ithillian’s
aid but it was
too late, the Black Gate had already fallen into the hands of Mordor and
Minas Morgal
and it would remain that way until the end of the hour. Gondor and Ithillian
tried
flanking and several screaming hard charges up the center but the Dark
side was prepared for all of the Light side’s tactics. The first
mission was won by the Dark side earning them 500 points.
11:00
AM – 12:00 NOON MISSION 2
The mission consisted of the Light side keeping the Ring Bearer alive
and protect the
ring. The Ring Bearer was a guy in an orange vest with a Frisbee that
said “RING” on
it. The Ithillian’s moved him to an easily defended area off to
one corner of the field
and set up a defensive with Gondor’s help. Mordor and Minas Morgal
got only a
glimpse of the Ring Bearer from across the swamp but never were able to
attack his
position. Ithillian and Gondor kept the Dark side occupied with battles
well away from
the Ring Bearers position. The second mission was won by the Light side
earning
them 500 points.
12:00
NOON – 1:00 AM LUNCH BREAK
The lunch break consisted of a small devotional, prize giveaway, and a
hotdog
cookout. The scores were announced and the Light side was ahead but by
only a
few points. It was still anyone’s game.
1:00
PM – 2:00 PM MISSION 3
The mission consisted of the Dark side keeping a Hobbit alive. He was
a guy in an
orange vest. At the start of the hour it began to rain but it did not
stop the players
from taking the field. The Light side came out strong and began to take
all the
bases, these were also the only insertion points on the field. About 20
minutes into
the hour the rain stopped and the Light side was heavy into hunting for
that Hobbit.
It was rumored that if Gondor or Ithillian got within reach of the Hobbit
the Dark
side would “Take him out”. Around 1:30 the Light side’s
radios were screaming
with reports of Hobbit sightings. They were closing in and rumor has it
the Dark
side made good on their promise and executed the Hobbit before the Light
side
could take him. At this point the Light side held every base/insertion
point except
the Black Gate. An insertion of Mordor and Minas Morgal forces were inserted
at
the Black Gate and were quickly eliminated by the Gondor and Ithillian
forces that
had surrounded the Black Gate. This resulted in the Light side occupying
all the
insertion points and earning them 500 points.
2:00
PM – 3:00 PM MISSION 4
The officials stopped the game and sent the teams back to their original
basses and
restarted the game. This way the Dark side would have their insertion
points back.
The fourth mission consisted of the Dark side needing to take over the
Ithillian
Ranger Outpost. Mordor and Minas Morgal fought hard with several good
pushes
but were never able to take the Ithillian Outpost from the Ithillian’s
and Gondor.
The Dark side did not achieve their mission.
3:00
PM – 4:00 PM FINAL MISSION
The final mission consisted of the Battle of the Pelennor Field. In order
to get to the
field the Dark side would have to cross the river. The river had been
held by
Gondor all day from the pine covered hill overlooking the bridge. This
hill was
heavily fortified all day up until the last 15 minutes of the fourth mission
when more
men were needed to hold the Ithillian Outpost. This left only a few defenders
at the
river. The Dark side took advantage of the situation by putting live players
in with
dead players that were making their way off the field. They walked right
through
the Light side line acting like out players and when they got to the bridge
they were
finally challenged by a handful of Ithillian players but it was too late.
They had
taken the Pine hill overlooking the river and quickly inserted a large
force there to
take an early hold of the Pelennor field. For an hour Ryan and Jesse the
Heroic
Commanders of the Light side tried everything to get over the river. They
tried
smoke, paint grenades, using the Army of the Dead, and many screaming
charges
that resulted in being cut down every time. When the final horn blew at
4:00 PM
the Dark side had won 1000 points for having both their battle flags in
the circle on
the Plennor field.
FINAL
RESULTS
The game ended at 4:00 pm and at 4:05 pm a large thunder storm started
with heavy rain. To the Light side the storm seemed as if it was a result
of the Dark side
winning the day. But when the final scores were tallied Gondor and Ithillian
had
won the day by around 400 points. It was very close but for the second
year in a
row the Light side won the day. In the end everyone had a great time and
that
showed in the smiling faces of all the players as they left the field.
A big thanks goes
out to the Don and his staff at Center Lake Bible Camp for another great
Scenario
Paintball Event.
